Pie Irons have been a big part of camping for as long as most of us can remember. It’s amazing how many things you can make in them. Everything from lunch, dinner, and snacks to tasty desserts. We tend to think that most recipes are centered around a couple of slices of buttered bread with lots of goodness in between but there are plenty of other options for cooking in your pie iron. We found a few recipes worth trying on your next camping trip.
You use pre-made pie crust for this. Butter two sections and place one in the pie iron, butter side down. Then top it with cubes of cooked beef, potatoes, onions, and peppers. Top all of this with the other section of buttered pie crust – butter side up – and latch the pie iron. Cook it over the campfire and about 5 minutes later you have a steaming hot beef pie for dinner.
Dip two pieces of bread in beaten egg with a little milk. Place one piece in each side of the pie iron and add some strawberry jam or maple syrup in the center. Close it up and cook the sweetest campfire French toast you could ever hope to have.
You can make a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, a creamy tuna melt, BLTs with a twist, or you can make fried potatoes, grilled onions, garlic bread rolls, and cornbread. Most everything you want to eat at the campground can be made in the pie iron.
Another benefit of using pie irons is that you can get the whole family involved. Kids are excited to help with dinner when they can put things into the iron and be involved in the toasting process. They will remember these meals just like you do when you were a kid. It’s a lot of fun and gets the job of cooking dinner done.
